Joost Zwarts: Metaphors

One of my new growing interests is metaphors in the Bible, specifically the New Testament.

Handout of my presentation 'Blending and elaboration in the Pauline member metaphors', presented at the 2016 Annual meeting of the European Association of Biblical Studies, Leuven, 18 July 2016. I argue that the word μέλος 'body part, member' can have the meaning 'co-member (of the same body)' (Rom 12:4-5, Eph 4:25) and that this meaning is also needed to make sense of 1 Cor 6:15, where believers can be co-members of the union (metaphorical body) they form either with Christ or with a prostitute.

Interactive visualizations, supporting my presentation (slides) 'Cross-domain mappings in the Louw-Nida lexicon', for the 2017 combined meeting of the European Association of Biblical Studies and Society of Biblical Studies, Berlin, August 8, 2017. It demonstrates that circular visualizations have potential for offering insight in the metaphorical mappings that are part of that lexicon and that the semantic domains of Louw & Nida might connect in a useful way to domains in conceptual metaphor theory.
